Unless you’ve been asleep under a rock somewhere, and one that lacks wi-fi, you know the headline story carrying the Indianapolis Colts this offseason is the blockbuster trade for former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, a move that arrived on the heels of trading away Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders only one year after trading for him. But the tectonic shift at QB isn’t the only thing head coach Frank Reich has cooking, as he also hopes to level up his defense in 2022 — putting in a call to John Fox to aid in that effort.

Fox is joining the Colts staff under Reich as a senior defensive assistant, the team announced on Monday, in a move that adds a lot of experience to the role. He’s yet another recognizable face joining the Colts coaching staff for next season, with Reich also adding franchise legend Reggie Wayne as wide receivers coach

Fox, 67, mostly stepped away from the NFL after his split from the Chicago Bears following the 2017 season. Prior to his several seasons spent in the Windy City, Fox spent decades perfecting his coaching craft at both the collegiate and professional level before taking on his first-ever role as head coach for the Carolina Panthers in 2002. He’d go on to spend nine seasons with the team before moving on to take the same position for the Denver Broncos in 2011, and his recent hiatus from the league has seen him put his talents as a broadcaster on display.

He’ll now put the microphone down and pick the clipboard up yet again, with an eye on helping defensive coordinator Gus Bradley lead a talented top-10 defense — anchored by All-Pro linebacker Darius Leonard — that could still use some refinement in 2022.
